Catching up on Catching

Last Sunday - Went to Crystal Cove for an hour. Only an hour because there were weeds everywhere, and that was about all I could take of the Weed Fest. I somehow managed to hook three small perch, and I think I was super lucky to get those.

Saturday (yesterday) - Newport with my spin fishing buddies. Low tide to start, quickly filling in, overcast, a bit windy, cold water, and almost all ultra (finger-size) dink perch were caught. I only got a couple of hand-size models, and one good perch about 11-12 inches. I ran into "Downey Fly Fisher" Don, someone I believe I first met on the beach in Newport several years ago. I watched Don hook up and do battle with a shovel nose guitar fish. I was watching the fight and we both were looking and thinking that this SNGF must have a lure hanging from it's mouth? It turned out to be a very unusual double - a foul-hooked SNGF dragging a fair-hooked perch on the bottom fly. I'll bet you couldn't do that if you tried!

And Sunday

Sunday was spent in HB with a couple of fly fishing buddies, Julio and Mark, just a mile down the road from Saturday's fishing. I noticed some really good structure right off the bat. The fishing was not wide open, but the water was warmer, the catching was better, and the quality of fish was better too. I used a SF blend Clouser and my "Scrat" (small racoon/white Clouser), and both did their fair share of catching.

I caught a total of 26 or 27 fish, and at least four, maybe five species, depending on how you count. Mostly BSP, one wall eyed surf perch, one smelt, one halibut, and one corbina. The corbina was hooked in the cheek - not sure if that counts or not.
