Mission Bay - 6/20

Took a three hour cruise around Mission Bay by float tube this morning. It was a cool grey day as San Diego often delivers this time of the year. We found some fish but the bite wasn't stellar.

What they lacked in numbers they made up in variety and aggressiveness with some decent size thrown in for good measure. I had a nice mixture of small halibut, calicos, sand bass and spotties plus a mystery to me fish. When first seen in the water I thought it was a striped bass but once in my hand it was clear that the stripes were definitely the wrong color. It did a bit of croaking in my hand before the release but didn't look like any croaker I've caught before.

I finished the morning with 10 fish to hand spread over 5 different species. Biggest of the day was a nice spottie that taped out btwn 14 and 15 inches.

Here's the mystery fish

Rich I believe you caught one of the Salema species.

Cheers, Ken

Thanks Ken. It’s a new species for me. I love the variety of species down here in the San Diego area bays.

That would make sense. See:

Nice spottie in that pic!

On the Fishbrain app I saw a post where someone was catching these at the Newport bait barge last week and reported they were catching "baby striped bass"

Salema

Nice variety. Yes, that's Salema - very often mistaken for a striper...
