AB Spotties 3rd week in August..

Checked out some likely Spottie spots in Alamitos Bay in the tube during the evenings this week with mixed results probably tide and lack of current related due to the relatively low tide swings we have had; still not seeing bait fish in any numbers so tested out a few flies,

a big old 1/0 red Sculpin head, forgot to take pics before the release..

and the faithful red eyed olive over white SF Blend Clouser.

As my fish finder is buggered I used the old plumbline method of checking depth and key points and as most of the area seemed to be in the 16'-20' depth range a floating line with a 10' intermediate polyleader and a 10' 15 lb Fluo leader got the flies down without dredging the weeds.
On different evenings I fished the back bay areas under the bridge by Mothers Beach, the water off the beach on the peninsula and out by the Ballast Point area where the afternoon wind was seriously crazy and picked up a few legal looking fish on each session. I did lose two fish which almost ripped the 7' #2/3 weight rod out of my hand and got me snagged up so I will be upgrading the buggy whip to an #8 weight to give me more "horsing out" power as I continue to explore this fishery which is in my new back yard.

Some pics..

It was nice meeting you Tuesday night, and thanks for that beak fly! Beautiful shots--now I just need to snag some myself!

Cheers,
Jeff

Great. Need you there. I recently explored the Mother's Beach area and had a ferocious hookup towards the north end of the rocks on the boat launch side. Some good weed beds there. Getting late in the summer so kids sailing lessons should be done.

Brian,

Nice. You are smart to fish the bays, because the surf has just been terrible - can't buy a bite and too many people!
